Over the coming months Mercato on Byron will be unveiling it’s beautiful public arts with will entrance with their coastal industrial elegance.

This distinctive design is the brainchild of Byron Bay’s own concept interior designer, Nyree Mackenzie, who has overseen the creative direction and retail space fit out for the region’s new multi-million dollar retail precinct Mercato on Byron.

“I’ve injected the organic, rustic boho Byron style into the public spaces, dining precinct and retail shopping floor in the complex,” said Ms Mackenzie.

“Hand written illustrative signage, recycled materials including wood and bricks and indoor gardens give Mercato the true relaxed feel of the Byron region.”

Nyree Mackenzie was engaged by developers Azzura Investments Limited and Wingate to create a consistent look and feel for Australia’s first retail precinct to achieve the much sort after, GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL AUSTRALIA FIVE STAR GREEN STAR RETAIL CENTRE DESIGN V1 2018.

Ms Mackenzie holds dual degrees in Visual Arts and Audio Engineering. She owns a local interior design consultancy ‘Mackenzie Design’ and is an engaged member of the local artists collective that will be exhibiting works in the new gallery within Mercato on Byron.

She is also a dedicated Big Scrub Landcare volunteer.

“This is not your run of the mill shopping centre; it’s no Westfield. The developers said they wanted to build a retail precinct with an affinity for the local environment and that’s what we’ve done in Mercato on Byron.

“I’ve used natural light and the composition of building materials and furnishings to create a story for this precinct, and that story is all about how we care for our environment and live with the beautiful coastal hinterland that we are blessed with,” said Ms Mackenzie.

Ms Mackenzie has also completed two major collaborative artworks for the precinct with Woody from ‘Eastern Forge’.

Their piece titled ‘Feather Chair’ is created from hand made steel and recycled rose wood timber from the Big Scrub area, and the second piece ‘The Big Scrub’ is in honour of the Big Scrub-Bangalow palm canopy.

Byron Fresh Cafe

Nyree Mackenzie Interior Design

By Dove Tailed Double Stitched

Part-Parisian Cafe, part-surf shack, the new Byron Fresh Cafe in Byron Bay epitomises the ‘laid-back chic’ the area is renowned for. The interior, which was the brainchild of Interior Designer Nyree Mackenzie effortlessly combines elements of classic French style (wrought iron, delicate geometric tiles, bistro chairs) with the Cafe’s weatherbeaten exterior – making it look like the Cafe washed ashore, after being adrift for several months.

To achieve this creative look, we were honored that Nyree chose our gorgeous Cast Iron Chaplin Chairs, as well as our Copper Brooklyn Bentwood Chairs for the interior seating. Illuminated by paint-splattered industrial hanging lamps, we think they look rather sensational                            (if we say so ourselves!).

With plenty of design features to catch your eye – the fabulous double height French doors being one of our personal favourites – the atmosphere is relaxed, yet sophisticated. Open daily from 7:30am to 10pm at night, the Cafe also dishes out some delectable grub, as well as some of the best coffee around (or so we’ve heard). They’ve also been known to promote some great live music in the evenings – the perfect accompaniment to dinner after a long day in the Byron sunshine. We’ll definitely be making a beeline for this place next time we’re up.
